Genealogical Research
Professional research into your family line, prepared before you arrive and continued alongside you on the ground.
More than a vacation. A once-in-a-lifetime journey designed for descendants of families from Lago, Calabria, who wish to reconnect with their heritage, discover their ancestors and experience the authentic soul of Southern Italy.
Somewhere in Lago there is a street your great-grandmother walked before she boarded a ship and never came back. There is a baptism record with your surname written in careful ink. There is a house, a doorway, a name still known in the village.
Most travel takes you somewhere new. This one takes you somewhere that has been waiting for you. We designed it slowly, in the way Calabria itself moves — long lunches, unhurried afternoons, conversations that begin with a surname and end with an embrace.
It is genealogy and family history, yes. But it is also the smell of bread from a wood oven, the taste of wine from a hillside your family once worked, a village square at dusk where someone recognizes your name.
Every element of this journey is designed around one idea: that discovery is more powerful when it is personal. Here is what the experience is built from.
Professional research into your family line, prepared before you arrive and continued alongside you on the ground.
Guided access to civil records in Lago's town hall — birth, marriage and emigration documents bearing your family name.
Baptism and marriage registers held by the local church, often reaching further back than any civil record.
Where records allow, we locate the actual house or street your family lived on — and stand there with you.
Introductions to Laghitani who still carry your surname. Some travellers meet relatives they never knew existed.
Slow walks through the historic centre with a local guide who knows which families lived behind which doors.
The borghi around Lago that never reach a guidebook — stone hamlets, mountain chapels, roads that end in silence.
Meals in family homes and rural trattorie, where recipes have not changed since your ancestors ate them.
Hands-on cooking sessions with Calabrian nonne — pasta shaped by hand, sauces built with patience.
Small family wineries on the Tyrrhenian slopes, tasted with the producers who work the vines themselves.
Ceramics, weaving, woodwork and other crafts still practised by hand across the Calabrian hinterland.
From the Tyrrhenian coastline to the chestnut woods of the Appennino Paolano — Calabria at its most cinematic.
Churches, festivals, dialect, music and memory — the living culture that shaped the family you come from.
You do not need to speak Italian. You do not need a completed family tree. You only need the desire to know where you come from.
Anyone whose parents, grandparents or great-grandparents were born in Lago or its frazioni.
Families who built new lives in the United States and want to close the circle for the first time.
Second, third and fourth generations from Toronto, Montréal and beyond, returning to the source.
Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Australia, the UK, Germany, France — the Laghitani diaspora spans continents.
Travellers drawn to Calabria by belonging rather than by a checklist of sights.
Parents and adult children, siblings, cousins — a shared journey often becomes a family's defining memory.
The Lago Heritage Journey is not a finished product waiting to be sold. It is a project taking shape together with descendants of Lago families around the world.
Every person who joins the waiting list tells us something we need to know: which surnames to research, which villages matter, how many generations have passed, what people most hope to find. That information shapes the itinerary — which archives we open, which families we contact, how much time we leave for the moments that cannot be scheduled.
By registering, you are not simply requesting information. You are helping design an experience that will bring the Laghitani diaspora home.
Together we are creating much more than a trip. We are rebuilding a bridge between generations.Associazione Laghitani nel Mondo & Vita Calabra Tours
Four steps between today and the morning you arrive in Calabria.
Free, with no cost and no obligation. You tell us your family surname, your origins and what you hope to discover.
Working alongside descendants of Lago families around the world, we shape the eight days around what matters most to the group.
The complete itinerary, dates and details reach the waiting list before any public announcement. Places are limited to fifteen.
Eight days, seven nights, in the season you choose — spring blossom, summer festivals, the autumn chestnut harvest or the quiet intimacy of a Calabrian winter. You walk the streets your family left, and rediscover the story you were always part of.
This initiative is promoted by Associazione Laghitani nel Mondo in collaboration with Vita Calabra Tours.
Giuseppe has spent years gathering the scattered threads of the Laghitani diaspora — connecting families in North and South America, Australia and across Europe with the village their ancestors left. His work is dedicated to preserving the identity, dialect, records and traditions of Lago, and to making sure that the generations born far from Calabria still have a way home. The association exists for one reason: no Laghitano in the world should lose the memory of where their family began.
A Calabrian tour operator specialized in ancestral travel, genealogical research and tailor-made private journeys throughout Southern Italy. Vita Calabra works directly with municipal and parish archives, local guides, family-run wineries, artisans and host families across the region — and designs every journey privately, seamlessly and at a human scale. Local knowledge, discreet luxury, and a deep understanding of what it means to come back after three generations away.
Free and without obligation. The more you tell us about your family, the more precisely we can shape this journey — and begin looking for your name in the archives of Lago.
Your place on the waiting list for The Lago Heritage Journey is confirmed. You will receive a confirmation email shortly.
From today, your family surname becomes part of our research. As the itinerary takes shape over the coming months, you will be among the first to see it — before any public announcement.
A presto, in Calabria.
Yes. There is no cost and no obligation. Registering simply tells us that this journey matters to you, and allows us to include your family's story in how we design it.
No. It does not reserve a place and it does not commit you to anything. It gives you priority access when registrations officially open — which matters, because the group is limited to fifteen participants.
Once the itinerary has been finalized together with descendants of Lago families around the world. Waiting List members will receive the complete programme and priority access before the public announcement.
That is the most common starting point, and it is entirely welcome. A surname and a connection to Lago are enough. The genealogical research is part of the journey — for many travellers, it is the journey.
Not at all. The experience is conducted in English, with local guides and interpreters present for archive visits, family meetings and every conversation along the way.
